Newquay based PR agency, Voice Communications, has just been awarded the coveted B-Corp certification. The certification shines a spotlight on Voice as part of a new wave of global businesses, committed to balancing the triple bottom line (people, planet and profit), whilst striving to make the world a better place. Joining a growing community of B-Corp businesses in Cornwall, Voice, which established a presence in the South West in October 2018, is based at C-Space in Newquay. C-Space is a brand new working space created via a collaboration between Crowdfunder and the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO).
A B-Corporation is a purpose-driven business, dedicated to creating positive impacts for their communities, teams, clients and the environment. This is an ethos that has always been part of the fabric of Voice – an agency which has successfully grown with a core set of values at its heart.
After beginning its B-Corp journey back in September 2019, over the past seven months Voice has met specific environmental, social, governance, customer and community benchmarks outlined by B-Corp. These standards were backed-up through evidence which was submitted by Voice, highlighting the company’s commitment to looking after its people, supporting its clients and safeguarding the planet.
Founded by Managing Director, Nichola Cain, in 2006 over the past 14 years Voice has been committed to proactively inspiring and nurturing its people and clients – growing a team of industry experts who are passionate about shining a light on purpose driven organisations and businesses and all share the company’s values.
“We are super proud to have become part of the international B-Corporation community – a community which echoes Voice’s ethos and mirrors our values. Balancing the triple bottom line, people, planet and profit, has always been part of our culture at Voice and it’s an incredible achievement for us as a business to make it official.”Nichola Cain, Managing Director, Voice Communications
Voice works collaboratively with businesses and organisations globally to amplify their message and highlight their purpose through PR, marketing, and digital services – ultimately making a positive difference.
Working with clients as an extension of their team, Voice provides services to organisations in the South West and throughout the UK in a range of industries, including green energy, construction hospitality, tech, not for profit, home improvement, recycling and waste management, travel and leisure, and the charity sector.
Alongside growing its client base, Voice is dedicated to supporting charities and similar organisations through pro-bono support. Recently, Voice has been a source of support for The Hugs Foundation, a Cornwall-based equine rescue and rehabilitation charity. During these unprecedented times, Voice has been helping the charity pro-bono to raise awareness through social media and fundraising to encourage donations. In addition, Voice has provided consultancy and mentoring support.
Newquay based Oltco, a client since October 2018, is a leading sustainable resin driveway company with franchises across the UK. Voice has played key a role in the company’s growth with the launch of the world’s first driveway solution made from waste plastic already in circulation, Recycle Bound, launching new franchises, gaining media coverage and securing interviews. Voice has also played an educational role sharing its expertise in PR and marketing with new franchise owners. Voice’s partnership with Oltco has created a deeper relationship, becoming less about business and more about people.
Johnny Pearce, Co-Director of Oltco, says: “We are over the moon and very proud to hear that Voice has become a B-Corporation. The team at Voice has been so committed to Oltco, always going above and beyond for us. The results speak for themselves and have exceeded our expectations time and time again, including national, local and regional coverage. Voice always has Oltco’s best interests front of mind and the team is totally in line with our ethos to feel good about the work we do and the decisions we make. Voice has played an integral part in our growth, including the launch of Recycle Bound, and the team is part of the Oltco family. We’re excited about our work with this inspiring agency as they continue to support us with our sustainability communications and messaging.”

Spaceport Cornwall, the UK’s horizontal satellite launch site, and Canadian based aerospace and space company Space Engine Systems, has signed a MoU to identify opportunities for future collaboration.
Spaceport Cornwall the UK’s first horizontal launch site will offer from 2021 rapid, low cost, resilient and safe access to space and multi-fuel propulsion test facilities for launch vehicle developers. Spaceport Cornwall will be Europe’s Gateway to Space. Spaceport Cornwall will be the only place in the world where, satellite launch and scheduled passenger airline services are fully integrated at one location. As a well-located operational airport (4 flights/day to London Heathrow and daily services to Manchester) it offers a capable spaceflight capability with directly access to a Launch environment, for air launch system operations and rapid global transit R&D.
Space Engine Systems (SES) is a Canadian aerospace company that is pioneering the next generation of propulsion technologies for aerospace and space. Their ultimate goal is the design of a reusable, single-stage-to-orbit cruise vehicle that is capable of flight up to hypersonic speeds for use in aerospace and space applications. To achieve these targets, SES is developing a light, reusable, multi-fuel propulsion system. Space Engine Systems will fully test DASS GNX engine for space, DASS GN1 for aerospace and defence applications at hypersonic speeds. Our focus has always been the lowest cost to space at around $ 2,240 US per kilogram. The lowest cost in the world in the space industry. We think we can even do better. We are striving very hard to have our engines ready for the Lunar Mission by 2023. Space Engine Systems will also test its engines for launch in existing modified high Mach vehicle bodies available in the UK and USA to expedite the validation process for launch. Keep it Simple and never to Reinvent the wheel has always been our policy.
The collaboration will include sharing resources, operational knowledge, all for mutual commercial benefit and deliver competitive affordable global Spaceport operations. Areas of joint working may include; propulsion testing, educational outreach, funding bids, sector cluster growth, operations, new operational regulation, mission and range management, tourism economy, industrial participation and trade and investment.
Pradeep Dass, President & CTO Space Engine Systems, said “Space Engine Systems is very excited in setting up this R&D partnership potentially opening up major opportunities in the UK and Europe through Spaceport Cornwall. UK’s renowned universities and engineering talent pool will be of great benefit. Space Engine Systems is presently exploring similar opportunities in the USA too.’
Miles Carden, Director of Spaceport Cornwall, said ‘Spaceport Cornwall has a fantastic market advantage as one of the first mover spaceports in Europe, and we are now interested in developing partnership opportunities to deliver repeatable, cost effective, sustainable launch from the UK. This is one of the first signs that the Council’s investment in a Spaceport will be rewarded and be a catalyst for investment and trade. The team at Space Engine Systems are pioneering exciting new technology and we look forward to exploring the opportunity to collaborate more closely.’
This partnership is a first step towards Space Engine Systems potentially establishing a permanent R&D and manufacturing facility in Cornwall, and future launch operations. The facility would be the companies first outside North America.
Spaceport Cornwall was recently awarded £20 million of funding from Cornwall Council and the UK Space Agency with further investment from Virgin Orbit, Goonhilly Earth Station and C&IoS LEP. The Spaceport team in Cornwall Council is now seeking further commercial partnerships to develop the UK launch market.

Duesday, a Cornwall-based FinTech start-up, is already making a big impact abroad as it begins to export its services, with new investment and sales in Mexico.
Cornwall is an ideal location for businesses aspiring to succeed and grow across the world. There are more opportunities for Cornish businesses to export their services than ever before – whether it’s across the UK, or the rest of the world. And Duesday is rapidly turning into a major success story.
The Cornwall-founded start-up helps businesses of any size improve their payment interactions with customers. Their revolutionary platform enables simplified and automated cash flow processes, and makes it easy for customers to split bills and make recurring payments. After success across the UK, Duesday knew that Mexico’s lack of infrastructure for bill payments made it a perfect place to export the platform to – it just needed a way to get there.
A partnership for export success
Exporting to a new country isn’t easy. There’s a huge range of factors to think about, including cultural differences, logistics, market challenges, competition, and much more. And on top of that, it can be difficult to know where to start. Luckily, the Duesday team had the UK Department of International Trade (DIT) and Cornwall Trade and Investment on hand to support them.
Joining five other carefully selected ambitious FinTechs on DIT’s trade mission to Mexico, Duesday’s team visited Finnosummit 2019 – the leading conference for innovation on financial services in Latin America – to pitch their platform and meet potential investors.
Bringing the value of PayTech to Mexico
Duesday knew that simply taking its platform to Mexico as-is wouldn’t work, as mobile applications aren’t commonly used by Mexican citizens for financial services. Instead, the FinTech adapted its approach to offer the platform as an in-store service rather than an app; making it easier for citizens to pay recurring bills, and simplifying the sales process for businesses.
It’s an approach that landed the team huge success. Duesday returned from Mexico with an investment of over £1 million and has already sold more than 400 units of its platform to a retail chain in Mexico City – and that’s just the beginning. The FinTech is now looking to expand across other countries in Latin America, alongside continuing its focus on Mexico.
“The trade mission was a huge success for us,” says Marcus Kern, Co-Founder and CEO of Duesday. “It’s enabling us to grow faster than ever before – and ultimately, that means we’ll be able to create more jobs for our headquarters in Cornwall.”
Duesday’s team worked closely with Cornwall Trade and Investment throughout the entire journey – from producing marketing materials to securing funding for the trip – and it’s pushed their business to new heights.
“Exporting to new markets is a key milestone in any businesses’ journey,” says Nicola Lloyd, Director of Trade and Investment at Cornwall Trade and Investment. “Whether it’s offering financial support, or providing useful contacts, we help businesses think global—and ultimately create more jobs in the region.”
From dedicated funding and industry networks, to robust infrastructure and unique talent, Cornwall has the resources in place to support Duesday’s ambitions – making it the ideal base for international expansion.
