Transforming Cities Fund Workplace Travel Grant Opportunity

Through the Transforming Cities Fund Workplace Travel Grants scheme funded by the Department for Transport, Plymouth City Council are offering match-funded capital grants of up to £25,000 per business in the Plymouth city region.

This opportunity is for businesses within the Plymouth city region whose workforce commutes to and from Plymouth, or where the company operates within Plymouth, as well as the wider city region.

Projects which could be funded through the grants include secure cycle parking, pool bikes, workplace shower facilities or electric vehicle charging points. However, bids aren’t limited to these ideas and the Council are keen to hear innovative proposals to tackle issues specific to a company.

Full details can be found at www.plymouth.gov.uk/workplacetravelgrants. Grant applications can be submitted from Monday 26th October and the closing date for applications for the 2020/21 programme is Friday 15th January 2021.

All schemes funded this financial year must be delivered by mid-March but Plymouth City Council hope to be able to offer Workplace Travel Grants next year as well and information about the 2021/22 grants will be published on the website once available.

Oltco, the UK’s leading sustainable resin driveway company, is expanding its sustainable offering by switching from using plastic resin packaging to recyclable metal tins. This coincides with Oltco’s current innovative and award-winning sustainable resin driveway solution, Recycle Bound.

With Oltco’s HQ based in Newquay, Directors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, have always been aware of the damaging impact waste plastic has on the environment. This led the duo to launch Recycle Bound, the world’s first sustainable resin driveway solution made utilising waste plastic that is already in circulation, and what has now driven the pair to take their commitment one step further by eradicating plastic from their resin packaging.

With Cornwall’s rich history in the tin mining industry due to the county’s metallic mineral rich landscape, Oltco is proud to be connected to this long lineage of history by choosing tin for its new packaging.

Since it was founded in 2004, Oltco has grown a wide network of franchisees and employees and Johnny and Tom wanted to include the entire team during this process. The new packaging has been tried and tested on site with Oltco’s franchisees to ensure that it is suitable for the job and has been met with resounding success.

Johnny Pearce, Co-Director says: “This was an easy decision for us but one that took a lot of time to finalise, and we couldn’t be more excited with the results.

More companies should be choosing the planet over profit and we’re proud to be doing just that.

“In business, it is common for people to make short-term decisions to bring about fast results with the sole aim of increasing profit. At Oltco we look to the future and want to make sure we are delivering the best results for our customers, our team and the planet. We’re proud to be a business that fights for change and one that focuses on the triple bottom line (people, planet and profit)”

Tom Stringer, Co-Director adds: “This launch not only means a lot to Johnny and I but also to our wider Oltco network. We discussed the new packaging with each member of the Oltco team and found their insight incredibly valuable. Their feedback filled us with every confidence as we received a unanimous ‘of course we should do this.’ It means so much to us to have the support from our Oltco family.

“This new packaging launch fits perfectly with our ethos ‘to feel good about the work that we do and the decisions that we make,’ and it demonstrates our continued commitment to protecting the environment. We hope our customers love this new packaging as much as we do!”

Feritech has announced that it is building a new, state of the art facility just outside Falmouth in Cornwall. Covering an area of 3.5 acres, the new site received planning approval this week. It will greatly increase Feritech‘s manufacturing capabilities and the services offered to both local customers and the company’s established global client base.

Founded in 2012, Feritech designs and builds subsea engineering solutions primarily for the marine geotechnical sector. All their products are designed, manufactured and tested at their own facilities. Over 90% of the company’s products and services are exported, with clients in more than 40 different countries.

Co-founder and Managing Director, Rob Ferris, explains:

“This new facility is a major step forward for our business. The development of Floating Offshore Wind is a fast growing regional and global opportunity and we are ramping up our capacity, partly so we can help accelerate development of this vital new industry. The new facility will be capable of handling up to 20 ton fabrications and is complemented with a new machining hall which can produce all manner of precision machined parts. Feritech’s design, electrical, electronic and hydraulic capabilities will also be expanded in line with the increased subcontract projects that we expect to fulfil.

“Research and development within the offshore renewable energy sector will always be a primary operation of the company and this facility will allow Feritech to undertake new challenges within this sector, providing solutions for customers quickly, while also tightly controlling the quality of the process from start to finish and all under one roof.”

Steve Jermy, CEO of Wave Hub Ltd, which is leading the South West Floating Offshore Wind Accelerator Project, says:

“The South West of the UK is set to become a world leader in floating offshore wind (FLOW). This exciting new development by Feritech exemplifies how innovative and forward looking businesses are rising to the challenge and will help to fast track the region’s capacity to build out large scale wind farms in the Celtic Sea from 2025 onwards.”

Rob Ferris adds:

“The new building has also been designed to prove that our industry can work in harmony with the environment. The facility will harvest its own water, use ground source to heat the offices, and a solar roof with power storage to generate its own electricity. The site will have over 5,000 trees planted and use a pond to capture all the surface run off from the site. This will act as a heat store and provide vital new habitats for wildlife.”

A closer look at Newquay’s thriving business community

Whether it’s the promise of a comfortable work-life balance, or the draw of the region’s innovative spirit, there are many different reasons why businesses choose Cornwall. And with exciting new workspaces like Prow Park springing up across the county, the list just keeps growing.

Based in the centre of Newquay, Prow Park hosts some of Cornwall’s most forward-thinking companies, spanning every industry from finance and SEO marketing to sustainable product design and creative advertising.

But it’s more than just a workspace. Prow Park’s founders have created a collaborative community and culture for businesses to grow in – with all the facilities they need to perform at their best.

What’s on offer at Prow Park?

Prow Park has everything you’d expect from a modern workspace rental, with purpose-built conference rooms, superfast broadband, accessible parking and out-of-hours security. But the business park really stands out when you start to explore the additional services and support its team offers.

The concept was brought to life by some of Cornwall’s leading business minds, who are always on-hand to offer startup support, help establish funding connections and give business advice to any entrepreneurs looking for a helping hand. Paired with on-site capacity for marketing, design, promotion and branding, the park provides new businesses with an ideal environment to grow their ideas – and existing businesses with the resources they need to grow further.

Thanks to the park’s diverse variety of workspaces, it’s suitable for a wide range of companies too. Prow Park offers purpose-built warehouses, flexible-term office suites, modern workshops and studios, and flexible hot desks, which means any business – from industrial manufacturers to creative market agencies – can find a home there.

While newly-developed, the park already has more than its fair share of success stories to celebrate – and few stand out more than sustainable fashion company Waterhaul.

Finding a location that matches company ethos

Waterhaul’s business and operating model is built around sustainability – turning unwanted, harmful raw materials like used fishing nets into fashionable, high-performance sunglasses. With such a strong focus on his company’s environmental impact, Waterhaul’s CEO and founder Harry Dennis wanted to find a location that was both close to the source of those raw materials, and matched the company’s values.

Prow Park was the ideal choice, located just a few miles from dozens of beaches, and holding a strong identity based on supporting local startups and sustainability-focused projects. The entire business park evolved out of shipping containers, which were recycled and renovated to create a series of office and retail units over the ground and first floor – making it a practical and sustainable workspace solution for Waterhaul.

“Newquay is a great place to find likeminded people who are interested in making a difference and passionate about marine conservation,” explained Harry. “When I viewed Prow Park, the owners introduced me to multiple tenants who might be able to help my business. By the end of our viewing, I was already connected with a new source for my raw materials, and a marketing partner to help grow Waterhaul’s sales and brand awareness online.”

Explore Prow Park for yourself

If you think your business could thrive in Prow Park, or if you’re just looking to find out more about the innovative workspace, visit the website or get in touch with the park’s founders to find out more.

And if you’d like to explore more unique workspaces in Cornwall, speak to our team today – we’d love to help you find your perfect location.

Additional lode structures with visible tin mineralisation have been intersected deeper in hole SDD20-001, the results for which will be released as assays are received and tabulated.

Richard Williams, CEO, stated “The Intermediate Lode structure was predicted by our geological team to be in this area but such a high-grade intersection so far beneath the old mine workings was not anticipated, it does reinforce the exploration potential at South Crofty and our ability to find economic structures within areas of the mine that have been previously overlooked.”

The historic South Crofty mine was a high-grade copper producer from the late 16th century up until the mid-19th century, when it transitioned to being a high-grade tin producer, with more than 100,000 tonnes of tin metal produced between 1906 and 1998. The project benefits from an active 50 year mine permit, planning permission to build new surface processing facilities, environmental permits to dewater the mine, and very strong local and national support to see the mine reopened.
