This month, Swedish-based IT company Strikersoft signed an eHealth partnership agreement with Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. They will now work together to leverage a range of health-related IT and mobile application innovations.
The announcement is extremely important for three reasons:
It is no secret that there are increased demands on healthcare providers around the country. Technology is an enabler which can crucially increase access to treatment for patients, enhance our knowledge about disease and illness through data sharing, and improve care and efficiency by reducing the amount of time and resource spent. Cornwall, like every other region in the UK, faces these challenges. Strikersoft brings knowledge from other markets should only be viewed as a benefit to Cornwall.
Second, Cornwall’s health tech sector is full of leading minds who are constantly looking to push boundaries and strengthen the relationship between innovation and technology. This week Cornwall Trade and Investment attended the NHS Health and Care Innovation Expo in Manchester. Both Strikersoft and RCHT were there, but they were also joined by Camborne-based LumiraDX Care Solutions who showcased their ground-breaking patient-facing self-care app – engage. It records health data input by the patient and also keeps individuals digitally connected to their care team. It has the potential to change people’s lives and frees up clinicians’ time. Developed in Cornwall, it is now being used across the UK. It is examples like this that show how impressive the region’s health tech sector is to the rest of the world.
Third, the first stage of this agreement will be that Strikersoft will act in a ‘reseller’ capacity, meaning they will be bringing innovations developed within RCHT to market. It is possible for this to happen because Strikersoft has been able to connect directly with the NHS Trust. Cornwall’s streamlined system – a single NHS Trust and one Clinical Commissioning Group – makes it stand apart for investors as a highly attractive proposition. As a result, Strikersoft has a valuable foothold in the UK market with this entry point.
I am proud that Cornwall Trade and Investment has been able to play a key role in facilitating this partnership by making introductions that RCHT says is “a perfect fit”. We first met with Strikersoft a year ago at Digital Health Days Stockholm. In less than twelve months, the progress made, and opportunities which have arisen, are incredible. Next-generation businesses like Strikersoft are looking for places to build creative solutions for the future and gain a foothold in the UK – Cornwall meets that ambition. This partnership shows how quickly relationships can be built and how exciting the potential is. We look forward to meeting and supporting other companies also looking to take the next step.
