Cornwall is playing an integral role in the growth of the digital industries in the UK and having significant impact on the industries economic benefits. A region predominantly known for its tourist appeal and striking scenery is, surprising to some, nurturing a high-growth tech industry – bubbling away under the surface.
Tech Nation, a national report produced by Tech City UK, was established to showcase and emphasise the crucial role that the UK has in leading the way for global digital innovation. The report includes a comprehensive analysis of the UK’s digital tech ecosystem and enhances the fact that strong tech companies are born out of the strength of their ecosystems. Fortunately, regional tech ecosystems have a crucial role to play in capitalising on the potential for growth in the UK and Cornwall is already ahead of the curve.
The latest Tech Nation report (released in March 2017) showcases the impact of Cornwall’s digital tech cluster and states “Cornwall’s digital tech cluster might be small, but it is increasingly mighty”. The region has learnt to punch above its weight in numerous industries and it continues to do so with the tech industry. The Creativetech industry in Cornwall is growing year-on-year, with the regions high-growth businesses instilling their positivity about the tech sector’s future growth potential.
Alongside the growth potential in the region the Tech Nation report highlighted the reason for many businesses choosing to expand into, or set up in, the region. The primary reason for their decision to base their business in Cornwall was favouring the coastal quality of life, “they stay, however, for the community and the connectivity”.
